I Love The Rain

This week sees a moderate rain in many places of Shillong. While in other areas rainfall is already pouring non-stop, yet Shillong is waiting for the real Summer’s Rain to come. Today somehow, rainfall take a different course. It seems summer rain is finally here. Yet we still have to wait and pray for more rain. If rain is not falling, we will be totally dried out.

I clearly remember when I first stay in Shillong, by the month of May, rain would shower and pour. It always happen that by June, the water at “Damsite” is overflowing. Rain continue till October but the highest is in June-July. This trend is always there for 3-4 years. But in recent years, I find rainfall in Shillong is diminishing year by year. In the last two years, I happened to travel weekly outside of Shillong, I find the most untold fact that, while Shillong is almost dried up due to lack of rain, outside Shillong, as you travel towards Jowai, it is raining cat and dog. Rain start in the month of May, by the time “Behdeinkhlam” Festival is observed, region around Jowai is already almost fed up with rainfall. As I travel to my hometown, I find the same thing.

When I was a child I still remember that rainfall is usually non-stop continuously for nine days. We wont be able to see the sunshine. In those days I would wish that I can go to Australia during summer, and come back during winter.

Coming back to the present situation, I realize that I actually miss the days where everyday after school we would gather by the fire to keep ourselves warm and dry. We would be prepared for summer by storing firewood and making sure they remain dry. The sound of raindrop on a tin-roof that sound like music to the ear singing a lullaby for us to sleep. The warmth of the fireplace. The days when we play in the muddy water. This make me to Love Rain. I wish rainfall will always continue for 7-9 days this year. Bringing hope, and washing all the dirt of Shillong.

“The Scotland of The East” not any more…

Shillong the capital of Meghalaya is always known as “The Scotland of the East”. Surrounded by beautiful hills and two main stream, Shillong earn this name since the British rule in India.

Shillong Golf Course

The Beautiful Green Shillong Golf Course

The beautiful pine trees, the green valleys and the clean clear water that runs around the City resembles Scotland in every aspect. The people that live here are well known for their cleanliness. Yet with time did Shillong still deserve this name? Lets take a look.

The other day I was passing by Shillong beautiful 18 Hole Golf Course, and I think to myself if it happens that tourist are brought here, they would surely believe that Shillong is “The Scotland of the East”. It wasn’t far as 2 kM from this beautiful and serene place. I set my foot to stop by for a routine check to my scooter. A place where 2 kM it looks like “the Scotland of the East” but just here it looks like it is a Dustbin.

Just nearby is the “Wahumkhrah” stream that flows collecting all kinds of dirt, choked with polythene bags and many more.  Its just five days since World Environment Day, and yet the surrounding around us is in such a condition. Thus, it seem to me that the name earned by Shillong as “the Scotland of the East” is lost. We need to earn that name once again.

Choked Drain at Polo

A dreadful state of "the Scotland of the East"

I believe that if we all join hands together by doing simple things like taking care of what rubbish we throw randomly. A little act of kindness towards our environment such as using biodegradable items for carrying your shopping and items. Minimize the use of polythene bags, try and reuse bottle. I believe we can all contribute to a better and cleaner Shillong.

Let us unite together and earn Shillong the rightful name as “the Scotland of the East”. Take for example how people at Mawlynnong Village, keep their surrounding clean and beautiful. Their ability is not only form them. I can see that all visitors to Mawlynnong always take equal responsibility to keep Mawlynnong clean. Had it been that visitors didn’t care, I can say that Mawlynnong will not remain clean as always.

A Clean Environment brings health, wealth and happiness…

“Many Species. One Planet. One Future”

The fifth of June every year is celebrated as World Environment Day(WED). This year the theme of the WED is ‘Many Species. One Planet. One Future’. Let us ask ourselves how far have we really Celebrated this day with a real sense? Is it that we just remembered our environment only on June 5th while pollute it the whole 364 days? Look around us; what did we find? When the theme for this year is choosen, I believe that the theme speak loud and clear sending a message to all of us for the need to preserve all different types of species. The Flora and Fauna, that helps to bring an ecological balance on the whole planet. All species plays a vital role in this planet. Just think if there are no more trees, what will be the consequences? the ultimate truth is, no animal shall live.

Hence, this year let us make a vow, to preserve all kinds of birds, animals, insects, plants, flowers, trees etc so that we can really proclaim proudly the word “Many Species. One Planet. One Future“.

“Saramati”

Naduh Nyngkong ba nga wan hangne,
Jingkmen suda ka tap ianga,
Ha i por ba tang katto katne,
Nga shem ki lok ia nga ki bha.

Ynda nga sdang ban im ban sah,
Mynsngi nga kmen, mynmiet ka tngen,
Ban rieh ha poh Syrngiew jong pha,
Mynsiem jong nga ka dap jingkmen.

Ka ja ka doh kam ju pep noh,
Ka sha, jingbam nga ki pynkdang,

Nga dap jingkmen bad lyiur bad tlang

Arsnem jingdon jong nga bad pha,
Ngan iai kynmaw hala karta,
Kumno ngan ong, katno ngan niew,
Saramati ngam lah ban thew.

Mynta ka por jong nga la kut,
Ban iai shong sah bad pha nga kwah,
Mynsiem ka dap da jingpang nud,
Jingkynmaw ieit shirta kin sah.

Saramati, Hostel jong ngi,

“Hawow ka sngi ji phi ngan ji”

Poetry Scribbled by me on 7 – July – 2004 when I’ve to vacate my hostel. I just found it back yesterday from my Diary.
