This week sees a moderate rain in many places of Shillong. While in other areas rainfall is already pouring non-stop, yet Shillong is waiting for the real Summer’s Rain to come. Today somehow, rainfall take a different course. It seems summer rain is finally here. Yet we still have to wait and pray for more rain. If rain is not falling, we will be totally dried out.
I clearly remember when I first stay in Shillong, by the month of May, rain would shower and pour. It always happen that by June, the water at “Damsite” is overflowing. Rain continue till October but the highest is in June-July. This trend is always there for 3-4 years. But in recent years, I find rainfall in Shillong is diminishing year by year. In the last two years, I happened to travel weekly outside of Shillong, I find the most untold fact that, while Shillong is almost dried up due to lack of rain, outside Shillong, as you travel towards Jowai, it is raining cat and dog. Rain start in the month of May, by the time “Behdeinkhlam” Festival is observed, region around Jowai is already almost fed up with rainfall. As I travel to my hometown, I find the same thing.
When I was a child I still remember that rainfall is usually non-stop continuously for nine days. We wont be able to see the sunshine. In those days I would wish that I can go to Australia during summer, and come back during winter.
Coming back to the present situation, I realize that I actually miss the days where everyday after school we would gather by the fire to keep ourselves warm and dry. We would be prepared for summer by storing firewood and making sure they remain dry. The sound of raindrop on a tin-roof that sound like music to the ear singing a lullaby for us to sleep. The warmth of the fireplace. The days when we play in the muddy water. This make me to Love Rain. I wish rainfall will always continue for 7-9 days this year. Bringing hope, and washing all the dirt of Shillong.
